What a colossal dunderhead!
No problem deciding what news captures top spot for Nonsense of the Week Award. CNN’s Christiane Amanpour takes the honor with her contention that the First Amendment rights of Trump supporters during the election ought to have played second fiddle to getting her preferred candidate elected.
During the tail end of an interview with former FBI director James Comey, Amanpour springs this question,
“Of course, “Lock Her Up” was a feature of the 2016 Trump campaign. Do you in, retrospect, wish that people like yourself, the head of the FBI, the people in charge of law and order, had shut down that language, that it was dangerous potentially, that it could have created violence, that it kind of is hate speech? Should that have been allowed?”
This dangerous display of progressive authoritarianism was too much even for the corrupt Comey, who replied,
“That’s not a role for government to play,” he replied. He continued, “The beauty of this country is people can say what they want even if it’s misleading and it’s demagoguery. The people who should have shut it down were Republicans who understand the rule of law and the values that they stand for. Shame on them, but it wasn’t a role for government to play.”
Amanpour, a Hillary cheerleader, was shattered that her gal lost the election to a former reality TV star. After the election, Amanpour somberly spoke about how Trump’s election would set off a wave of violence around the world targeted at journalists. For Amanpour, under Trump, freedom of the press was at risk. A question arises however, if she believers freedom of the press is inviolate, shy does she give such short shrift to the First Amendment?
The answer, of course is that as an unrepentant card-carrying progressive, any exercise of the First Amendment that she considers “hate speech” should be quashed by the federal government. Her ludicrous argument was that the chant, “Lock her up!” put Hillary at risk and would lead to an outbreak of violence. Amanpour is simply restating what is becoming an ironclad tenet of progressivism: free speech must always be curtailed if it is “hate speech,” a term that is pristinely undefined by progressives so that it can be used as a cudgel against those who hold opposing political views, I.e., Trump voters.
Sadly, the fact that she isn’t the object of ridicule among her peers tells us all we need to know about the overt bias and hard-left slant of the mainstream media. It will be interesting to see if any of her CNN colleagues challenge her astonishing statement and breathtaking ignorance about our constitution.
But a parting question: Can this woman really be that stupid that she would ask such a question?
